I've been offline for a few days because my internet connection was down. I do a lot on the internet, so that was an interesting experience.
When I finally got back and started reading through all the posts here I'd missed...... one thing jumped right out at me. People looking to the DDJ (or Daoism) to tell them what they should hold on to and what they should let go of?
How could anyone else tell you that?
If you find something that's working for you - like the internet when I could use it. Or if something is taken away from you - like the internet when it wasn't accessible. Why shun one and accept another? Would I not get back on the internet because it might be sporadic? Would you eliminate something from your life because........ ???

I don't think anyone or anything can tell us that, Nina.
The Internet--even when it acts up--is useful to you, so you keep using it. Holding on to the useful seems to be the way nature works--so by holding on to the Internet's usefulness you're just doing what comes naturally to you.
I like to use the example of how trees in certain climates lose their leaves in winter. That's an example of nature ridding itself of what's not useful, since most trees are better off leafless in frigid climates.
We don't need a guru or a book to tell us these things, just like the trees don't need anyone to tell them when to lose their leaves. |

I was without the internet for 3-4 months last year. It was an interesting experience to say the least. I wrote and read a lot during that time. I also went on a lot of very long walks.
Steve summed it up pretty good. Unless you were talking about intangible things? |

We need the trees to tell us that their leaves fall in the autumn and grow in the spring. We need to record the event of what and when did the leaves fall to tell time of the year.....

depends on the tree, not all trees lose their leaves, not every location has 4 seasons.
Chidragon, we don't need to do anything. |

Fundamentally--at the core of things--that's absolutely correct, imo. There's nothing wrong with the universe just as it is. Every atom of it (including the atoms that comprise us) is perfectly placed and performing just fine.
That doesn't preclude the felt-need to perfect what is already perfect.
To be human is to possess that felt-need. |

Thanks for the great responses, guys. Interesting stuff.
I'm not sure about the "we don't need to do anything".
In my analogy...... I had lots of stuff I needed to do on the internet. Fun responsibilities and people expecting to hear from me. Yes, it's true. So..... I needed to get on the phone with verizon and keep hounding them until I found someone who could fix the problem.
Some things may already be perfect, but some things do go awry at times and we have to do something to fix them, don't we?
That's a bit off-topic, since I was originally referring to people who look to others to tell them how to live their lives. And those who make distinctions between right and wring, and tell others they should correct their sinful ways. It's funny how some people think the DDJ is doing that.
